Some 501 people from 120 families have been evacuated up to this afternoon in two districts in Kelantan due to floods caused by heavy rain overnight.

According to Bernama, Kelantan Civil Defence Force director Zainuddin Husin said 83 of the families were evacuated in the Jeli district and 37 in Kuala Krai.

"In Jeli, 15 families (comprising 58 people) were moved to the relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kuala Balah, 53 families (208 people) to the Jeli Kesedar Hall and 15 families (50 people) to Sekolah Kebangsaan Jeli 1.

"In Kuala Krai, 25 families (125 people) were moved to Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Bedal, eight families (40 people) to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Keroh and four families (20 people) to the Kampung Bedal Youth Hall," he said when contacted.

Zainuddin said he expected the number of evacuees to rise as rain continued to fall.

Bernama reported that the evacuation began at 8am when floodwaters began to rise up to about one metre in the low-lying villages.

The major roads in the affected areas remain passable to all vehicles.

Meanwhile, Bernama also reported that floods had forced the closure of eight stretches of road in Terengganu, according to the Terengganu Disaster Management Committee.

Its spokesperson Lt-Col (PA) Che Adam A Rahman, said that in the district of Hulu Terengganu, stretches of four roads were closed to all traffic from 10am after floodwaters rose to 0.5 metre or higher and the stretch of Jalan Bukit Perah-Kuala Kejir at Kampung Jak was closed to light vehicles.

The four other flooded roads are Jalan Aring-Kuala Jeneris at Kampung Basung (0.5 metre), Jalan Tapah at Kampung Kepah (0.5 metre), Jalan Matang-Kuala Telemong at Kampung Nibong (0.7 metre) and Jalan Kuala Pueh-Tapah-Payang Kayu-Baung-Kuala Ping (0.8 metre), he said.

He also said that in the Setiu district, stretches of two roads were closed to light vehicles.

"Jalan Pengkalan Merbau-Pelong near Kampung Pelong Kepah was flooded to a depth of 0.8 metre and was closed at 9.30am. Jalan Chalok Bukit Putera-Telaga Papan near Kampung Lubuk Panjang was flooded to a depth of 0.6 metre and was closed at 11am," he said when contacted by Bernama.

The number of flood victims in Terengganu has increased to 250 people, involving 63 families, from 212 people (54 families) earlier today.

Che Adam said two new relief centres were opened to accommodate the additional flood victims.

One of them is Surau Kampung Hulu Lerek, which now accommodates 16 people from four families, and the other at Surau Kampung Chenerong Leban, Durian Kassim (seven victims from three families), he said.

He said the remaining victims were at the three relief centres opened earlier today.

They are at Surau Kampung Bukit Ara, which housed 170 victims from 35 families; Balairaya Kampung Bukit Kolam (25 people from eight families) and Dewan Sri Puteh in Kampung Tok Lawit (32 people from 13 families).
