It is important to ensure that funds used to pay for the haj is from halal sources to ensure the haj is divinely-accepted, said Kedah deputy mufti Marwazi Dziayuddin.

He was commenting on former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad who said the pilgrimages of those sponsored by the 1MDB Foundation will not be divinely-accepted, as 1MDB's funds are allegedly riddled with irregularities.

"We are compelled to perform the haj using funds from clean and halal sources, that is basic."
