Flood victims at a relief centre in Kampung Lubuk Periuk faced a brief scare when the food supply for them did not arrive on time.

Hasmah Mat Zin, 53, said she and the other flood victims were evacuated to the location after their houses were inundated at about 9am today.

She said while waiting for the food and other necessities to arrive, they used up all they could find at the centre.

"We were getting worried about the situation before the rescue team arrived.

"We only had biscuits as well as some rice and canned sardines for lunch," she said when met by Bernama.

Kuala Berang Fire and Rescue Station head, Mohd Zamri Omar, said the team had to struggle for two hours to overcome metre-deep water to reach the relief centre by road.

"Upon receiving the request from the Welfare Department, our team sprang into action to deliver the food supply.

"We used a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a boat to finally reach the place," he said.

There were 267 flood victims from 75 families housed at the centre.

The floods in Terengganu appeared to have worsened today as the number of evacuees rose to 4,352 in six districts.

Boy may have drowned

Meanwhile, a 14-year-old boy is feared to have been drowned after he slipped and fell into Sungai Kelantan in Kampung Laut, Tumpat today.

Tumpat Fire Station chief, Senior Fire Officer Ayub Mahmud, said they received a call about a missing boy, Wan Rostam Danaeil Wan Roszan at 5.34pm.

"A search operation has been carried out despite the bad weather conditions and strong currents in the river," he said when contacted by Bernama.

The boy's father, Wan Roszan Wan Abd Majid, 47, said his son was playing with several friends before he slipped into the river and was swept away.

He said villagers who saw the incident then told his wife, who runs a stall selling fried bananas nearby.

Wan Rostam Danaeil is a student of SMK Kampung Laut.
