All political parties have been invited to attend PAS' rally in support of amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act (Act 355).

Asked whether invitations had been extended to DAP and Amanah, PAS information chief Nasrudin Hassan replied: "We are inviting all."

"We are even inviting the Malay rulers to grace the rally," he added.

Speaking at a press conference in Shah Alam, Nasrudin said the invitations will be sent over the next week starting today.

On Umno's participation in the rally, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said they will get all who "love Act 355" involved.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang is seeking to amend Act 355 and raise the punishment limit to 30 years’ jail, RM100,000 fine and 100 strokes of the rotan.

The bill is expected to be debated in Parliament in March, with the government taking it over after the second reading.

Hadi had initially sought to remove caps limiting punishments that can be dealt by Syariah Courts.

This raised concerns that the amendments would pave the way for the implementation of hudud law.

This also led to a spat with DAP that broke up Pakatan Rakyat and caused a split within PAS, resulting in the formation of Amanah.

Tuan Ibrahim, however, said opposition to Act 355 had cooled recently, and said that efforts are underway to explain concerns regarding the amendments.

PAS and other proponents of the amendments, including Umno, had said that the changes would only affect Muslims.

Tuan Ibrahim also dismissed allegations that Umno was hijacking the amendments for their own political gain.

"The matter of hijacking doesn't arise," he said, adding that all private member's bills would be taken over by the government.
