'Players could be clad only in towels if Jamal becomes FAS president'
The intention of Sungai Besar Umno division leader Jamal Md Yunos to become the president of the Football Association of Selangor (FAS) has received ridicule from Gabungan Kelab Penyokong Selangor (GKPS).
The group’s patron, Adam Rosly, said they are concerned that some players would be clad only in towels when playing on the field if Jamal becomes president of the association.
Adam’s remarks were in reference to Jamal’s stunt last year in which he only wore towels to cover his modesty during his protest at the Selangor State Secretariat building over water cuts in several parts of Selangor.
“Don’t use the Red Giants as a political means and place to harness your clown skills,” Adam said in a statement today.
The crisis surrounding FAS, he added, should not be politicised.
“A lowly politician like Jamal shouldn’t use it as a means to become popular,” Adam (wearing white in photo) said.
Yesterday, Jamal, complete with face paint depicting the Selangor flag, went to the FAS headquarters in Kelana Jaya to submit his letter offering himself for the position of FAS president.
The letter was submitted to FAS exco member Adnan Sarrif.
Jamal pledged he would solve the late salary woes of players and officials 14 days into his position as FAS president.
On Dec 30 last year, Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali resigned as FAS president in protest against the “excessive politics, old-fashioned way of doing things, over-dependency on subsidy mentality”, using the same words used to describe the current FAS line-up by Selangor Raja Muda Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
However, Adam said the decision made by both Azmin and Selangor state Youth and Sports Committee chairperson Amirudin Shari to leave FAS does not mean that the association should be led by just anyone.
Adam said it was strange for Jamal to suddenly become interested in matters concerning football.
“His propaganda to bring Selangor football to the same level as the Johor football team is hilarious. As loyal supporters, we know that both teams are in their own classes.”
And apart from replacing president of the FAS, Adam said, everyone needed to understand that FAS had to be given a thorough makeover.
“We would like to advise Jamal not to harbour hopes of becoming FAS president as it is clear that it would only make matters more chaotic,” added Adam.
The FAS demanded RM15 million from the Selangor government and threatened to withdraw Selangor FA from the Super League if it did not get the fund.
However, the state government remains adamant that FAS will not get any additional funding.
