Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem, who passed away this afternoon, will be laid to rest at the Samariang Muslim cemetery after Zohor prayers tomorrow.

According to Borneo Post, tomorrow has been declared a public holiday in Sarawak, while a seven-day mourning period would be observed in the state.

The public can pay their last respects at the state mosque in Petra Jaya starting at 10.30am.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is also expected to arrive in Sarawak to pay his last respects.

Deputy Chief Minister Abang Johari Tun Openg told a press conference that all state flags would be hoisted at half mast during the period.

Also present at the press conference were Deputy Chief Minister Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and state secretary Mohd Morshidi Abdul Ghani.

Adenan, 72, took over the post of Sarawak chief minister from his predecessor, Abdul Taib Mahmud, in February 2014.

A popular leader, Adenan led BN to a sweeping victory in the last Sarawak state election, winning 72 state seats out of the 82 contested.

Soon after his passing, Twitter was flooded with messages of condolence from both ruling and opposition politicians.
