The amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998 is expected to be tabled in the next Parliament sitting in March, said Communications and Multimedia Deputy Minister Jailani Johari.

"If we are ready by then, hopefully, this will be one of the bills that will be presented this coming March. Otherwise, we will do it in the next session," he said.

The ministry had consulted more than 300 stakeholders, he told a press conference after attending an event in Subang.

Netizens who use the internet in a proper and responsible manner should not be worried about the amendments as the focus was not adding more forms of penalties.

"I don't think they should be scared of whatever amendments to the laws," he said.

"The government emphasised on building the infrastructure and spent money on it. We expected people out there to be more responsible."

It was reported on January 2016, Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak planned to amend CMA to curb extremism on internet and misuse of social media to instil hatred towards the government.

The government planned to table the amendment bill to Dewan Rakyat in March 2016. The plans, however, were put on hold.

Early this week, Salleh said the government was reviewing all cyber laws in a holistic manner to spur the internet economy.

Elaborating on this, Jailani said the focus of the talks had shifted from the punitive measures to the development of internet economy and industry.
