Three friends were sentenced to six months in jail and fined RM1,000 or another five months imprisonment by the Magistrate's Court in Shah Alam today for stealing RM162 from two mosques and a surau near Shah Alam.
Mohamad Amirul Ashraf Jaafar Sidek, 25, Mohd Nurman Hakim Ahmad Roslan, 25, and Mohamammad Faris Danial Faizal, 21, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Raja Noor Adilla Raja Mahyaldin.
Mohamad Amirul and Mohd Nurman were charged with stealing RM100 from the donation box at Masjid Al-Ubudiah in Section 19 in Shah Alam at 5.07pm.
They were charged on the second count with attempting to steal cash from the donation box at the surau in Section 23 in Shah Alam at 6.05pm by using a wire to fish out the money.
They committed the two offences on Dec 30.
Mohamad Amirul and Mohammad Faris Danial Faizal were charged with stealing RM62 from the donation box at Masjid Munawwarah, Section 27 in Shah Alam at 4.30am on June 16 using a wire to fish out the cash.
Earlier, counsel Nurul Ikrimah Mohd Raya said in mitigation for a lighter sentence for the trio that they were from poor families and did not have any criminal record, and had promised not to commit such offences again.
However, deputy public prosecutor Ng Wee Li urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence as a lesson to the trio and in the interest of the public.
