Umno and PAS were literally on the same ship today, thanks to the Food Flotilla for the Myanmar relief mission.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said the relief mission by the 1Malaysia Putra Club and other NGOs was organised out of concern for the suffering of the ethnic Rohingya in Myanmar.

"This is a historical moment. Today, we launch a relief mission together, that is the Food Flotilla for Myanmar.

"I am touched with the number of willing volunteers on the ship, who have contributed. This is a show of how concerned Malaysians are.

"This ship is a symbol of the integration of the Muslim community, because it is true that there are those from Umno and those from PAS," Najib said while speaking at the launch of the relief mission in Port Klang today.

PAS was represented at the event by party deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

Tuan Ibrahim also led the Friday prayers, which was joined by Najib.

The sermon was read by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom at Masjid Al-Qayyum Bandar Amanda Putra.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang could not attend as he had to go for a medical check-up.

Najib, who is Umno president, said the relief mission was also a follow-up to the cooperation between Umno and PAS at the “Solidarity with Rohingya” gathering on Dec 4 last year.

After that gathering, the prime minister said, he held an emergency meeting for the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to express himself clearly.

"We are not satisfied with how the motion was settled, but we have stated that the ethnic Rohingya have suffered enough," he added.

Najib also inspected the state of the Nautical Aliya ship, which was carrying 2,200 tonnes of food supply and 250 volunteers and left for Yangon about 4pm today.

Asked about any form of cooperation between PAS and Umno, Najib said it would depend on new developments.

"We will see further developments, we hope this aid will reach those who need it.

"After that, we will see the development and Malaysia will continue to fight on this issue," he said.
