The family of a policeman who is standing trial on charges in connection with the Islamic State (IS) has urged the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) to intervene.

They claim that lance corporal Mustaza Abdul Rahman, 29, was not being given a free trial.

This was conveyed during a meeting between family members and Suhakam officials yesterday.

Suhakam commissioner Mah Weng Kwai, who met the family members, barred reporters from covering the meeting on grounds that discussions might be prejudicial to the trial.

Mah refused to speak to reporters later. However, Mahathir said the commissioner was "surprised" with the details his family had presented.

"The Suhakam commissioner said they will take the necessary action but their options are limited.

"They did advise us on what we can do," Mahathir told reporters.

Mustaza has been slapped with three charges for supporting IS, hiding information concerning terrorist acts and for pledging loyalty to IS.

If found guilty, Mustaza can be sentenced with life imprisonment.
