PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli has urged both BN and Pakatan Harapan not to appoint politicians to government-linked companies (GLC).

He said this after backing former Bank Negara assistant governor Latifah Merican Cheong's suggestion that Felda and 1MDB, both government-linked entities, should be placed under the oversight of Parliament.

Rafizi, who elaborated at length on how Parliament can ensure only those who are truly qualified, instead of politicians, are appointed to GLCs, conceded that the appointment of politicians was still being practised in Harapan states.

"I will write official letters as an MP to Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to consider my position (on not appointing politicians to GLCs) in Selangor and Penang," said Rafizi in a statement today.

Rafizi stressed that this view is his personal opinion.

In his statement, Rafizi proposed two parliamentary select committees - one to monitor the performance of ministries and government agencies and another to oversee the government's investments, such as Petronas and GLCs.

He said the committees can also conduct confirmation hearings for candidates proposed by the prime minister for chief executive officer, managing director and chairperson for GLCs.

Rafizi reminded Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak that people are increasingly against politicians being involved in GLCs.

"The sentiment among the people is against politicians being involved due to the various scandals in his administration as a result of politicians leading government-owned organisations or companies," he said.

Rafizi said Najib should heed the call and remove seven out of 10 political appointees on the Lembaga Tabung Haji board of directors and six out of 11 political appointees on the Felda board of directors.

They include Tabung Haji chairperson Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, who is also Baling MP and Felda chairperson Shahrir Samad, who is also Johor Baru MP.
