There is no pact between DAP's parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang and Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad to rescue Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, a central DAP leader said today.

In a statement, DAP's national legal bureau chief Gobind Singh referred to the allegations made by Rural and Regional Development Minister Ismail Sabri Yaacob, as reported by The Star yesterday.

"That statement doesn't make sense.

"There is nothing Dr Mahathir can do which could impact on the pending proceedings against Guan Eng and Ismail should know that, being a lawyer himself," said the Puchong MP.

The Star yesterday quoted Ismail as claiming that Lim had made a pact with Mahathir to "rescue" his son from going to jail over allegations of corruption surrounding the purchase of a bungalow at below market price.

Ismail also claimed that Lim is now defending Mahathir over renewed outcry against the Bumiputera Malaysia Finance and forex scandals which occurred during the latter's tenure as prime minister, in a bid to prevent his son's incarceration.

At the time, Lim had reportedly urged a royal commission of inquiry to investigate the scandal which resulted in billions of ringgit in losses to the country.

Last Tuesday, Lim who was speaking at a joint press conference with Mahathir, said that while he stands by his call for an RCI on the BMF scandal, priority should now be given to investigate the 1MDB scandal.

Gobind, meanwhile, also pointed out that all criminal proceedings in the country are instituted at the discretion of the Attorney-General, as provided for under Article 145(3) of the Federal Constitution.

"Dr Mahathir is not the attorney-general.

"He has no legal standing to do anything which could possibly affect the proceedings or outcome of the proceedings against Guan Eng," said Gobind who rubbished Ismail's claims as "utter nonsense" and "factually perverse".

In June last year, Guan Eng was charged with two counts of corruption involving the purchase of his bungalow on Jalan Pinhorn at below market price.

Lim, meanwhile, sarcastically congratulated Ismail for launching what he claimed to be an attack by Barisan Nasional’s cybertroopers to demonise him and DAP, ahead of the next 14th general election.

“I want to congratulate the minister (Ismail) for another dubious ‘first’ in Malaysian politics - telling 10 lies in a short five-paragraph statement.

“I am prepared to appear in a joint media conference with him for me to point out the ten lies he had told in his five-paragraph statement attacking me yesterday,” said Lim in a statement.

Lim said he believes that Ismail’s statement, as well as Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s tweet yesterday which named him as Pakatan Harapan’s de facto leader, was actually the work of BN’s team of cybertroopers.

At the same time, Lim also pointed out that Umno had accused Mahathir of turning into his stooge, while its ally MCA and Gerakan had accused him of being a puppet of the former premier.

“Both cannot be true. It is one or the other, or both are falsehoods,” he stressed.
