The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested a 62-year-old general manager of a government agency and his 38-year-old wife.

This is over suspicion that the general manager had abused his position to award more than 50 projects amounting close to RM1 million to two companies belonging to his wife.

A source said the general manager was detained at 11am at his office this morning, whereas the wife was picked up from their house this morning.

The suspect is believed to have abused his position since holding the post of deputy general manager from 2014, until his promotion to general manager last September.

The general manager is also believed to be directly involved in the tender process and is also the official responsible for approving payments to his wife's companies.

The wife's companies, according to the source, were established in 2010 and 2015 respectively.

“MACC raided the office and house of the general manager. Also raided were the house and offices of his wife which are located in Kuala Lumpur.

“Several documents were seized to facilitate investigations.”

MACC investigations department director Simi Abd Ghani confirmed the arrest, and revealed that the two suspects would be brought to the Putrajaya court for remand proceedings tomorrow.

Since last year, the commission has been on the warpath against high-profile civil servants suspected of being involved in corruption.

On Jan 27, MACC chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad also warned politicians to be careful.

"To all corrupt politicians, I have only one word for you: Wait," he told an interview.
