The 2050 National Transformation (TN50) policy will fail unless there are substantial institutional reforms to ensure government integrity, said Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) deputy Youth chief Faiz Fadzil.

In a statement today, Faiz said previous major federal government plans such as the New Economic Policy and Vision 2020 had failed mainly due to corruption.

Had these plans succeeded, Malaysia would have been on par with Singapore by now.

"TN50, too, will fail if integrity, which is the essence of everything successful, is not the basis for reform and transformation," said Faiz in a statement today, quoting American architect and author R Buckminster Fuller.

Of late, he said major government institutions such as 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), Federal Land Development Authority (Felda), Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) and Tabung Haji have been marred with scandals.

"TN50 will not succeed if the country’s system and management do not go through a transformation process and total reform.

"Institutional reform involving the legal institution, Parliament and government-linked companies (GLCs) is the first step towards transforming the country," he added.

Faiz said Malaysians have a chance to address these institutional weakness by voting in a new government during the next general election.

"The 14th general election is the best platform to save Malaysia so that the transformation will prioritise the rakyat’s welfare, justice and freedom."

TN50 was introduced by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in October last year. He said the 30-year plan will chart Malaysia's next stage of development.
