BN Youth has urged the Malaysian government to review its ties with North Korea in the wake of diplomatic friction between Putrajaya and Pyongyang over the murder of Kim Jong-nam.

Umno Youth vice-chief Khairul Azwan Harun made the call after a leading a protest outside the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur this evening, which saw participants brandishing placards stating “Respect Malaysia”, and other messages on a more satirical note.

One placard read “Make Kimchi not Kim dead” while another stated “Psy Yes, Spy No” in reference to the popular South Korean singer.

Malaysian politicians on both sides of the divide have been seing red over the North Korean embassy's accusations and criticism.

"Due to this act of intrusion, we urge the Malaysian government to withdraw from the free visa agreement with North Korea. We urge the government of Malaysia to reconsider our diplomatic ties with North Korea,” Khairul Azwan said.

"This demand demonstrates the deep anger and dissatisfaction felt by Malaysians when our rule of law is questioned by a foreign party," he told reporters.

Among others, Khairul Azwan said, North Korean Ambassador Kang Chol had defamed Malaysia with his accusation on the Malaysian police's investigation process and insinuating that Putrajaya is colluding with hostile forces.

The prostesters, numbering about 30, also submitted a memorandum to an embassy official.

Asked if the government should expel the ambassador, Khairul Azwan  said: "I will leave that to the government. They know what to do best."

He also threatened to hold a bigger protest in future, should the embassy continue with "such attitude and behaviour" against Malaysia.

Foreign Minister Anifah Aman has dismissed the North Korean ambassador's remarks as "lies and half-truths".

Jong-nam's death on Feb 13 has created diplomatic friction between Malaysia and North Korea.

Pyongyang has said the responsibility for Jong-nam's death rests on Malaysia as he had died here.
