PARLIAMENT The Trump administration had tried to dissuade Malaysia from continuing to support a UN security council resolution condemning Israel over illegal settlements in Palestine, claimed Deputy Foreign Minister Reezal Naina Merican.

He explained that the Trump administration was angered that the US had abstained from the UN security council vote on the resolution.

"They contacted us and tried to influence us, so that we don't continue supporting the resolution.

"But we didn't back down because we believe the policy was in the right," Reezal told the House today.

Reezal did not say when the Trump administration contacted Malaysia.

The UN security council resolution condemning Israel for building illegal settlements in Palestine was passed last December.

At the time, Donald Trump was only the president elect and had yet to take office.

Meanwhile Reezal stressed that Malaysia would maintain a pragmatic foreign policy and would not let major powers, be it from the West or the East to influence the nation.

"Trump said America first, but our policy is Malaysia and Malaysians first," he said.
