Ex-cop charged with causing stepdaughter's death

A former police corporal was charged in the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur today with committing culpable homicide not amounting to murder involving his stepdaughter.

Muhammad Khairuanuar Baharuddin, 35, claimed trial to causing the death of Hanis Amanda Mohd Zafil aged two years at a condominium at Seksyen 5, Wangsa Maju, at 3pm on Nov 6, 2015.

The charge under Section 304(b) of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of 10 years or a fine or both, on conviction.

The accused also claimed trial to an alternative charge of mistreatment and abuse of the victim, under Section 31(1)(a) and Section 31(2)(a) of the Child Act 2001.

Section 31(1)(a) carries a maximum fine of RM20,000 or imprisonment of up to 10 years or both, while Section 31(2)(a) carries a good behaviour bond with sureties for such period as the Court thinks fit.

Muhammad Khairuanuar allegedly committed the offence at the same place, time and date.

Judge Azian Othman set March 31 for re-mention and did not grant bail to the accused who was unrepresented. Deputy public prosecutor K Vasugi appeared for the prosecution.
