An emergency motion to debate the matter involving Maxim Birdnest Sdn Bhd, which is under probe for alleged involvement in human trafficking activities, was rejected in Parliament today. 

Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia rejected Charles Santiago's (DAP-Klang) emergency motion in his chamber, saying the authorities have looked into the case and action has been taken.

The motion breached Section 23 (1)(i) of the Parliamentary Standing Order, which stated a question shall not be asked as to whether statements in the press are accurate, he said. 

"Thus, I reject your motion," he said in a letter.

Charles has urged the August House to pass a resolution which calls for the federal government to act against Maxim Birdnest and public servants who may be in cahoots with modern slavery and forced labour. 

He opined this was a matter of public interest, thus should be debated in Parliament according to the Section 18(2) of the Standing Order. 

Charles said his motion was rejected by Pandikar for ridiculous reasons and alleged the speaker was not advised appropriately. 

"His decision undermines the role of Parliament as a check and balance to the executive," he added. 

The story of migrant workers from Indonesian being allegedly exploited and mistreated by Maxim Birdnest Sdn Bhd was recently highlighted by Malaysiakini and Tempo from Indonesia. 

On Tuesday, authorities raided the factory and took into custody the owner and several employees at the premises, and "rescued" Indonesian workers there.
