Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin denied that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had done a "U-turn" in Putrajaya's intended move to take over PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's bill to amend Act 355.

Khairy said the issue does not arise as the decision announced after the BN's supreme council meeting last night was consistent with the ruling coalition's consensus spirit.

"The decision made by the BN is based on discussions among leaders of component parties, whereby we have to respect the consensus spirit.

"So it has nothing to do with whether we have done a U-turn or not," he told reporters after attending a TN50 dialogue on the economy with Finance Minister II Johari Abdul Ghani in Putrajaya.

Khairy said this when asked to respond to critics who said Najib and Umno had gone back on the promise to take over the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 amendment bill.

Khairy had, during the dialogue held as part of the Finance Ministry's Open Day, said that one of his aspirations by the year 2050 would be for the people to be able to trust their politicians.

This was in response to participants who said the deficit of trust in the country's leaders was an issue that had to be addressed.

Commenting further, the Umno Youth chief stressed that BN has consistently respected the views of all of its component parties.

"We have to be consistent with the policies of BN, with which we cannot go ahead if we cannot get a consensus… we respect the stand of all BN component parties," Khairy added.

Participants at the Open Day session, comprising largely officers and staff of agencies under the Finance Ministry, were earlier invited to share their personal aspirations for the government's 30-year national transformation plan.

Among the issues raised were sustainable economic developments, youth unemployment, gender inequality as well as high debt ratio among youths.
