International media guru David Kirkham and veteran journalist M Krishnamoorthy took Campuskini participants on a journey on how to get publicity in the Malaysian media.

According to participants, the Media Relations and Press Release writing workshop was engaging, refreshing and a dramatic style of coaching.

“The dramatisation of a mock press conference and the technique in managing a crisis was entertaining, educational and informative,” said Universiti Malaya’s senior lecturer in the English Language, Sheena Kaur.

She described Campuskini’s one-day media relations workshop by both facilitators as enlightening and refreshing. There was never a dull moment and it was an excellent learning experience.

“The short sharing session by the editor-in-chief of Malaysiakini, Steven Gan, on the media landscape and how digital media is changing the way news is distributed and viewed by the public was indeed educational.

“It’s a hands-on, engaging and refreshing workshop with practical sessions on press release writing and how to report a press conference,” Sheena added.

The corporate affairs manager of Port Dickson-based Hengyuan Refining Company Bhd (formerly known as Shell Refining Company (Federation of Malaya) Bhd), Malar Ramalingam, said: “The use of video and practical activities by Kirkham and Krishnamoorthy were a refresher and a great learning reinforcement in this workshop.”

An assistant general manager for special projects with a Johor state government agency, Nursoraya Abdul Rahman, said it was a great opportunity for the participants to learn from the leaders in the media.

“It was a good sharing of knowledge and experience and I would attend again if there was an advance class in media relations. The press conference and crisis communications lecture by Kirkham was an eye-opener,” Nursoraya added.

Mugheelan Sellathoray, who works for a Klang community centre, commended the workshop as being “very good with experienced trainers”.

On the presentations, Mugheelan said: “The slides were compact, crispy and informative. The facilitators Kirkham and Krishnamoorthy exposed us to a better understanding of the media.”

Lembah Pantai community centre’s communications executive Bob Razi said: “Now, I clearly understand how to make a press release newsworthy.”
