PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has ticked off the Western world for declaring the death of democracy in Turkey, yet ignoring the developments in Malaysia.

"From the Malaysian perspective, criticisms of Turkey's democratic efforts are troubling given the general ambivalence of Western democracies towards Malaysia's own decades-long battle against the ruling party's kleptocracy, media control and blatant electoral manipulation," she said in a statement today.

She was referring to the international criticism after Turks voted in favour to expand Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan's powers in a referendum that would shift the country from a parliamentary democracy to an executive presidency.

Wan Azizah, in her statement, congratulated Turks for exercising their democratic rights in last Sunday's referendum.

"Turkey continues to be a role model for the developing world with its consistent exercise of democracy, economic growth and the betterment of the living conditions of its people.

"We hope the (ruling) AK Party will use this mandate to ensure that Turkey stays true to the path of democratic reforms.

"We hope that the international community will take this opportunity to consistently apply the same principles of democracy to Palestine, Egypt, Bangladesh, and of course Malaysia," she said.
