Pakatan Harapan-led governments will never blackmail university students into supporting them, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said today.

"We will give room and the chance to hear the voice of the young.

"Previously, Anwar Ibrahim had said the same when he led Pakatan Rakyat and a few months ago, Tun Dr Mahathir (Mohamad) had also said the same in support of Anis Syafiqah - this shows that they value the youth's opinions," Syed Saddiq said in a statement, referring to the 24-year-old suspended for six months by Universiti Malaya for her participation in the #TangkapMO1 rally last year.

Syed Saddiq was responding to a recent report which said the Public Service Department (PSD) would revoke the scholarships of PSD scholars who criticised the government.

He cited the example where students of Unisel in Selangor are free to criticise the administration of Menteri Besar Azmin Ali, without risking action against them.

"This shows that PH (Harapan) values differing opinions and does not gag students for political interests."

He then recalled being stopped from speaking at a debate in his own alma mater, after he wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, criticising his leadership.

"In fact, now I have been barred from entering any public university to teach, or to accept students' invitation. Even if I do, it has to be 'covertly' done.

"The voice of the youth should be valued and not muted. In fact, I would rather hold a dialogue with those I disagree and with those who hold different ideologies, as to me, this is the best platform to prepare our youths to boldly voice out, not only against the government, but also the opposition.

"Do not fall into the trap by Umno/BN which hopes to create a culture of fear among state-sponsored students," he said.

Syed Saddiq noted that he had met thousands of students abroad, including those in the United Kingdom, who had no action taken against them despite criticising the government.

"There was no problem at all. Their scholarships were not revoked. Even if it was, you can challenge them (the government) in the court of law.

"Do not let fear stop you from fighting for your beloved country," he said.
