Over 600 juveniles are involved in rape every year, according to crime statistics provided by the Home Ministry.

According to the statistics, 751 juveniles were involved in rape in 2014, 674 in 2015 and 691 in 2016.

The data was broken into four age groups, namely those aged between seven to 10, 11 to 12, 13 to 15 and 16 to 18.

In 2014, 588 of those suspected of committing rape offences were aged 16 to 18, 160 were aged 13 to 15 and three were aged 11 to 12.

In 2015, 525 of those suspected of committing rape offences were aged 16 to 18, 144 were aged 13 to 15, four were aged 11 to 12 and one was aged seven to 10.

Last year, those aged 16 to 18 involved in rape numbered 540, followed by 142 for those aged 13 to 15, seven for those aged 11 to 12 and two were aged seven to 10.

The data does not specify if the rape offence includes statutory rape.

The statistics were provided in a parliamentary written reply from Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He was responding to a question from Lenggong MP Shamsul Anuar Nasarah on child involvement in crime.

In total, 2,907 juveniles were involved in violent crimes, including rape, in 2014, followed 2,529 in 2015 and 2,526 cases in 2016.

 

 

As for property crime, the most common was motorcycle theft.

In 2014, a total of 3,110 juveniles were involved in motorcycle theft, the youngest being aged between seven to 10.

In 2015, the number was 2,634 and in the 2016 it was 2,655.

In total 6,386 juveniles were involved in property crime in 2014, followed by 5,605 in 2015 and 5,459 in 2016.
