Islamic State tells Muslims in Egypt to avoid Christian gatherings

The Islamic State extremist militia vowed more attacks against Egypt's Christian minority, warning Muslims against joining gatherings of Christians, foreigners or government facilities.

"We warn you to stay away from gatherings and places of interests to Christians, army and police, political and economic government facilities as well as gatherings of nationals of the Western crusaders,” said the leader of the group in Egypt, who was not named, in an interview published in Islamic State's Al-Nabaa online newspaper.

Egypt has the largest Christian community in the region, accounting for around 10 percent of the country's 92 million mostly Muslim population. In recent months, they have been the target of a spate of deadly attacks mostly claimed by the Islamic State militia.

The latest attack was on April 9, when two suicide bombings targeted two churches on Palm Sunday, killing at least 46 people. In response, Egypt announced a nationwide state of emergency for three months.

Egypt has also seen a series of attacks against security forces - mostly in the Sinai Peninsula - since the army's 2013 overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi following mass protests against his rule.
