PKR's top leadership will meet tomorrow and PAS' role in the Selangor cabinet is on the agenda, according to PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

Saifuddin said he has been briefed by Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali on what transpired during his meeting with the three exco members from PAS last Friday.

"I believe that this will be presented (during the meeting tomorrow)," he said.

On another development, Saifuddin said the party's next congress would be held the coming Sunday, in Shah Alam.

The PAS syura council, the highest decision-making body of PAS, decided to terminate political cooperation with PKR last Thursday, citing PKR’s violations of terms of the agreement that was established at the 11th general election in 2004.

The decision had an impact on the position of the three PAS state executive councillors in the Selangor government, but Selangor PAS said yesterday that the state executive councillors - Iskandar Abdul Samad, Ahmad Yunus Hairi and Zaidy Abdul Talib - would remain in their positions.

Azmin denied allegations that he had asked the three PAS exco members to resign in a meeting with them and Sallehen last Friday.

Selangor PAS said the three exco would remain in the state government until the dissolution of the state legislative assembly, saying that the move would prevent alleged mischief by DAP.


On Friday, Selangor Umno chairperson Noh Omar criticised Selangor PAS as being "dishonourable" and "opportunistic" for remaining in the Selangor government, despite having severed political ties with PKR.

Parliamentary seats

At the press conference earlier, Saifuddin said his party will hold a party congress on May 21, the last annual meeting before the coming general election, at Dewan Raja Muda Musa in Shah Alam.

When asked about PAS's confidence in winning 100 parliamentary seats in the coming election, Saifuddin said he would comment after PAS decides on how many seats it intends to contest.

"Right before the PAS muktamar, the party’s vice president Idris Ahmad said the party wanted to contest 80 parliamentary seats, while PAS president said they targeted five states and that he was confident of winning 40 seats.

"Its deputy president (Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man) said (the party) wanted to contest 80 seats while the information chief said 100 seats.

"So, I will only comment after PAS confirms how many seat it will contest," he said.

PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin, said PAS was open to cooperating with any party, included Umno.

"PAS has a right to cooperate with anyone it wants, just like it has a right to cut ties with PKR," said Saifuddin.
