A Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) grassroots leader has floated the idea of its president Mohamad Sabu, better known as Mat Sabu, becoming prime minister.

Tanjung Malim Amanah Youth secretary Mohd Azhar Abd Rahman said it was something to consider, as his party is the only one in Pakatan Harapan that did not appear to covet the position.

"Only Amanah does not appear to be interested in the prime ministerial position and only expresses its views about the position internally.

"But in a coalition that is open to different views and opinion, I float it here - why not Mohamad Sabu?" he said.

This was after an awkward incident during the 12th PKR Congress last Sunday where the party made the Harapan leadership hold up placards endorsing PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister but Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) leaders did not join in.

Mahathir had previously expressed preference for Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin as the coalition's prime minister's candidate but added that this was only if the coalition agreed.

PKR has unanimously backed party president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as interim prime minister pending Anwar's release from prison if the opposition wins.

Azhar noted that even DAP faced accusations that it coveted the prime minister position, prompting DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang to deny such ambitions by the party.

He stressed that the notion of Anwar eventually becoming prime minister if the opposition captures federal power was indisputable, but an interim prime minister was required.

"If the task of interim prime minister is given to him (Mat Sabu), I am confident he will not wait and immediately act to bring about change in accordance's to Anwar's and his allies' aspirations.

"Therefore,  I ask, why not Mohamad Sabu?" He said.

He pointed out that Mat Sabu's activism work had began in the 1970s and he had shown himself to be a principled person.

He added that while Mat Sabu may not have a doctorate, his track record spoke for itself.
