A fire broke out this morning at the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM).

According to the Bandar Tun Razak Fire and Rescue Services Department, the incident was a trash fire at the hospital's clinical block and did not involve any part of the building.

“It did not involve any building in the hospital compound, but was contained around the rubbish bin area and was swiftly put out. However, we are still in the process of investigating its cause,” a fire department spokesperson told Malaysiakini.

A fire truck with seven firemen and a supervisor from the Bandar Tun Razak station were immediately despatched to the hospital after being informed of the incident.  

Meanwhile, China Press reported that the fire broke out at 10.22am where a garbage storing facility on the third floor caught fire. It also reported investigators found discarded cigarette butts in the area. 

When contacted, HUKM said it will issue a statement on the matter. 

Last year, a fire broke out at the intensive care unit of the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru. Six people were killed  in that incident.

The incident also prompted a special probe to be conducted by an independent investigation committee and a full report is expected to be completed by this September.

Following that incident, a fire also broke out at the new Shah Alam Hospital's neo-natal intensive care unit on Feb 15 this year.
