Selangor Umno chief Noh Omar said Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah's displeasure against a speech given by a PKR MP in a mosque last week should act as reminder to all to respect sensitivities.

The sultan had instructed the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) to take action afainst Masjid An-Nur in Kampung Melayu Subang, after PKR's Subang MP Sivaras Rasiah gave a speech there after distributing RM71,000 in aid.

"We can campaign but it must be done in the right time, and places of worship should be respected. 

"I too visit non-Muslim places of worship in my work but I don't do political campaigning there. 

"We must know when to use our position as parliamentarian and when to stay away from certain programmes due to sensitivities," he told reporters in Putrajaya.

Sivarasa has denied making giving a political speech at the mosque and said he only talked about the Selangor government's commitment to support mosques. 

He added he attended the event, as he was also voted in by Muslim constituents. 

Meanwhile, Noh said the ban against political speeches in mosques was nothing new. 

"I remember this ban was even displayed at mosques, to ensure mosques are not used for politicking, especially in Ramadan. 

"Therefore, I feel this censure by the palace is appropriate, especially in this month of Ramadan, so we can practice respect among each other," he said.
