While certain quarters have criticised the Penang government of being anti-Islam and anti-Malay, state sponsored Yayasan Islam Pulau Pinang (YIPP) has been busy creating a mobile application for Muslims to "keep track of their Ramadan productivity".

Launched on Friday, the application allows Muslims to keep tabs on how much they have contributed to their faith during the fasting month which began on May 27.

So far, more than 1,300 have downloaded the application, which can be found on the Google Store, where Muslims all over the world can keep a checklist, among others, on their Terawih prayers, fasting and zakat payment.

"It helps us improve our productivity each Ramadan, as we strive to be better than previous years.

"We are keeping up with the times, as the youths these days are more interested in downloading applications from the internet instead of more traditional ways of keeping up with our faith," said YIPP manager Mohd Fitri Ibrahim, as he explained how the application works on Android phones.

"The app has much room for improvement. We are planning to add features such as the Quran and Hadith as we go along," he added, when met at the Penang Hajj Gallery on Lebuh Aceh.

Mohd Fitri said that the effort would not be made possible without the support of YIPP chairperson and PKR Penang chief Mansor Othman as well as Deputy Chief Minister I Rashid Hasnon.

During the launch, Mansor said the application will benefit all Muslims, and this was in line with YIPP's effort to promote Islam in Penang.

Other efforts include developing the Penang Hajj Gallery and the Penang "syariah compliant" hospital, which held its ground breaking ceremony last year, and officiated by Governor Abdul Rahman Abbas.
