Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), which is a PAS splinter party formed in the wake of the collapse of Pakatan Rakyat, is often accused of being subservient to DAP.

Amanah communications director Khalid Samad addresses this issue in response to a question posed by a Twitter user.

Twitter user Megat Ibrahim said, “Kami berfikir- kalau masuk PAN (Amanah) maksudnya wala kepada LGE, LKS. (We think – if we join Amanah, it means being loyal to Lim Guan Eng and Lim Kit Siang)."

Guan Eng is the secretary-general of DAP whereas his father Kit Siang is seen as an adviser of the party.

Responding to Megat, the Amanah leader said loyalty is to Allah and Prophet Muhammad, not to any individual.

“If it (an issue) is found to be detrimental to Islam, one must oppose even if it is an ulama (Islamic scholar,” he added.

This was just one of the exchanges between the Shah Alam MP and Twitter users regarding Amanah's role and if whether the party provided an alternative to PAS.

While PAS accuses those in Amanah of being turncoats and doing the bidding of DAP, Amanah, on the other hand, claims that PAS is working with Umno at the expense of its Islamic principles.

In an earlier tweet, Khalid claimed that Amanah has managed to replace PAS.

“Those who are loyal (to PAS leaders) are with PAS, and those who can think (berfikir) are with Amanah. (The latter) remain steadfast with the struggle, not the congregation,” he said.

Apart from PAS, Umno also often cites the Chinese-majority DAP to warn Malay voters on the alleged repercussions of casting their ballots for the opposition coalition.

The campaign intensified following the incarceration of Anwar Ibrahim, and the fallout between DAP and PAS, which led to the demise of Pakatan Harapan.

Umno has portrayed DAP as the most powerful party in the present opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan, and claims that it is the puppet master of the Malay leaders in PKR and Amanah.

The impression given is that DAP possesses a secret agenda to undermine the position of the Malays and Islam in Malaysia.

Despite DAP leaders vehemently opposing these allegations, observers have noted that the demonisation campaign has proven to be successful among rural Malays.

Based on this, there are those in Harapan who believe that Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad should be allowed to lead the charge of the opposition in the next polls.

They believe that Mahathir's presence at the helm of the coalition would convince Malay voters that their interests would be protected, and provide the opposition with a shot of taking Putrajaya.
