DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has rejected the possibility of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) leaders assuming the posts of chairperson and president of Pakatan Harapan.

"I would not agree that both the chairperson and president (posts) be filled by Bersatu. This is a monopoly and taking control (of the coalition)," he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.

"We (Harapan) have yet to make a final decision on it (the lineup)," he said, emphasising the need for a consensus between the member parties.

Lim was responding to reports that Bersatu proposed that its chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad and president Muhyiddin Yassin be appointed as chairperson and president of Harapan respectively.

Lim declined to respond to the question of whether DAP would accept the appointment of Mahathir or Muhyiddin as the top leader in Harapan.

"I don't know how the proposal leaked out to the media," added Lim, who is also Penang chief minister.

The opposition will decide on its leadership line-up in due course and announce it, he said.

Harapan announced its intention to submit its registration to the Registrar of Societies (Ros) after Bersatu joined the coalition on March 20. It needs to decide on its leadership line-up and logo before it can submit its application to the RoS.

It was initially reported that Harapan might appoint Mahathir and opposition leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the advisor of the coalition.

Bersatu was said to have submitted its proposal for the Harapan leadership line-up to its allies. The Umno splinter party proposed that jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim be allocated the role of advisor.

Additionally, Anwar's wife and PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail would serve as deputy chairperson while PKR deputy president Azmin Ali would become Harapan's deputy president.

On the other hand, DAP leader Lim Guan Eng and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) president Mohamad Sabu would be named as vice-presidents.

On those who suggested that Mahathir should lead Harapan in the coming general election, Lim said the former premier could be regarded as one of the coalition's major leaders.

"If Mahathir is willing to be one of those to lead the fight against the prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, Umno and BN, I would think that he should be allowed to play one of the major leading roles (in Harapan)," he said.

Meanwhile, Lim reiterated that Anwar was still a relevant figure in the country's political scene despite the fact that he was convicted and sentenced to a five-year jail term over a sodomy charge.

"We still support Anwar as the designated prime minister (if we win the next general election).

"But we have to accept the reality that he cannot be the prime minister immediately because he is not eligible. So, there will be an interim period.

"He is still relevant, we still endorse him as prime minister," he said.
