Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali should direct the police to conduct investigations on allegations against senior lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah purportedly receiving RM9.5 million from Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Lawyer Gobind Singh Deo said this following three police reports made against Shafee on the issue, which Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar had dismissed as hearsay.

“It is not for the IGP to say that it is hearsay. It is the job of a police investigating officer who receives the report, to investigate the matter and classify the offence.

“This is not only for this case but applies to other cases. Since the IGP is conflicted when he alleged the matter as hearsay, the AG can by law, intervene, and ask the police to investigate based on the reports already lodged,” he told reporters today.

The decision on whether the allegations are hearsay or not, he said, can then be made by the public prosecutor or deputy public prosecutors, or the court of law after the probe is completed.

Yesterday, Gobind, who is also Puchong MP, had raised Khalid's position of conflict when the latter dismissed Sarawak Report's story on the alleged payout by Najib to Shafee as hearsay, but yet confirmed knowing the main suspect in the Malacca police racketeering case, as reported in the same portal.

Sarawak Report had earlier alleged that Najib paid Shafee a fee of RM9.5 million for handling Anwar Ibrahim's case. 

The Prime Minister's Office did not respond to media queries on the claim while Shafee said last week that he would issue a media statement on the matter. So far no statement has been forthcoming from him.

Following this revelation, Anwar filed an originating summons last week to set aside his conviction and sentence, and today he filed a discovery order against Najib and Shafee.
