'Health Ministry to probe 'Facebook' pill incident'

The Health Ministry will investigate the reported case of a woman in Johor who was allegedly declared brain dead as a result of consuming an ecstasy pill known by its street name of Facebook.

Minister Dr S Subramaniam said today the ministry had yet to receive any report on the incident but he advised the people against consuming unapproved medicines.

A Chinese newspaper had reported that a woman had been declared brain dead after consuming the pill at a nightclub in Johor.

“We have not received any report on the incident. However, we will conduct an investigation and obtain more information on the incident. This matter is out of the medical jurisdiction, it comes under the purview of the police.

“Consumption of any form of pill or drug is at the individual’s own risk. Nevertheless, I wish to advise the people to only consume medicine approved by the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency,” he said at a press conference to introduce new players of the Malaysian Indian Sports Council-Malaysian Indian Football Association (MISC-MIFA) in Petaling Jaya.

Subramaniam, who is MISC-MIFA advisor, said the Health Ministry always gave emphasis to the types of medicine produced, ensuring whether they were safe for consumption and were recognised by pharmaceuticals.
