A public forum on reforming the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will be held on July 16, marking the eighth anniversary of the death of Teoh Beng Hock, who was found dead after allegedly plunging from the Selangor MACC headquarters.

The forum organisers, the Teoh Beng Hock Trust for Democracy, said the speakers would discuss measures to strengthen the MACC's capacity in tackling corruption and to protect the rights of detainees.

"After eight years, the Malaysian government has still failed to bring the perpetrators of Teoh's death to justice, yet the MACC officers involved were promoted to senior positions," it said.

Speakers will include Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah, Bar Council president George Varughese, Selangor Select Committee on Government Agencies, Statutory Bodies and State Subsidiary Companies (JP-Abas) chairperson Saari Sungib and Teoh Beng Hock Trust for Democracy board member Ngeow Chow Ying.

The organisers said that a seat on the panel has been allocated for a MACC representative. At the time of writing, the organisers have yet to confirm if a MACC representative would be present.

The public forum, titled "Reforming MACC: A road to good governance and human rights", will be held at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) and will begin at 8.30pm.

In 2011, a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) was conducted to investigate the cause of Teoh's death.

It concluded that Teoh was driven to a suicidal state due to the aggressive interrogation methods used by the MACC.

The RCI, headed by former Court of Appeal judge Steve Shim, had recommended that the MACC takes action against the three officers who carried out the investigations leading Teoh's death. However, this was not carried out.
