The Sarawak state government has confirmed two siblings who were infected with rabies, passed away today while another seven-year-old girl is critically ill.

In a statement today, Minister of Local Government and Housing, Dr Sim Kui Hian said the six-year-old girl and four-year-old boy, both from Kampong Paon, Sungai Rimu, Serian, were brain dead.

"The parents of the children have agreed to the life support system to be withdrawn," Sim said, adding the third patient is still being ventilated and is listed as critically ill.

It was reported that a total of three confirmed cases of the disease were identified, since the outbreak in the Serian District.

The boy and his sister were warded on June 9 and June 12 respectively while the seven-year-old girl from Kampung Lebur, Gedung developed a fever on June 23.

According to him, a total of 68 cumulative dog bite cases were detected in the Serian District between April 1 and July 4 by 11 health teams.

"As of today, 19 villages have been visited covering 2,098 households and 6,094 people have been reviewed," he added.

Sim, said the health team which carried out Active Case Detention (ACD), has also embarked on a disease awareness campaign.

The locals were told to take precautionary measures, which includes staying away from wild animals to decrease the risk of getting bitten.

"If you are bitten by a dog, make sure the wound is washed thoroughly with plenty of water and soap immediately and go to the nearest clinic or hospital," he added.
