Elephent herd enters teachers quarters in Gua Musang

The Kelantan Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) has deployed four personnel to track a herd of 10 wild elephants which destroyed crops and teachers quarters at the Pos Pasik Orang Asli settlement in the interior of Gua Musang yesterday.

Its director Mohd Hasdi Husin said their monitoring showed that the herd had gone back to the forest near the village.

“Perhilitan will continue to monitor and trace the animals for a few more days to ensure they do not enter the village,” he said when contacted by Bernama here today.

Mohd Hasdi advised the villagers not to take their own action to chase away the wild elephants as they could threaten their lives but to report immediately to Perhilitan.

The villagers claimed a herd of 10 wild elephants had entered the settlement and destroyed their banana cultivation as well as caused minor damages to the teachers quarters building at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Permai.

In the 4am incident, the 10-door teachers quarters were vacant because all the teachers were on their way back to the school after spending Aidilfitri in their hometowns.

The herd of wild elephants was believed to be foraging for food in the settlement area.
