Police are expected to question a man, who is believed to be an aide to a DAP assemblyperson in Penang, today in connection with an alleged sex crime involving a waitress.

Northeast district police chief Anuar Omar said the case is being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code which concerns “assault or use of criminal force to a person with intent to outrage modesty”.

The incident purportedly took place at a carpark in Lebuh Pantai, Georgetown, on July 6. The 21-year-old waitress had lodged a report with the Lebuh Pantai police station the following day.

It is learnt that the suspect was also a former councillor. He was dropped from his post before the 2013 polls.

Meanwhile, Penang police chief Chuah Ghee Lye said the victim is a student of a private college in Penang, and is working as a part-time waitress in one of the outlets in Jalan Pantai.

Jalan Pantai, or Beach Street, is commonly known as Penang's financial district. The area comes alive at nights with several entertainment outlets within the vicinity.

"There is no arrest yet. We are going to record his (suspect's) statement, and whether we arrest him or not depends on our investigations, as we have to probe the veracity of the allegations," Chuah told reporters at the police open house Aidilfitri celebration in George Town today.

Asked if there were CCTVs around the crime scene, Chuah said police would be obtaining them to assist in the investigations.

However, he declined to comment further, or reveal the identity of the suspect.

It is learnt that the suspect is an aide to a two-term DAP assemblyperson under the Bukit Gelugor constituency, which covers Seri Delima, Paya Terubong and Air Itam.

When contacted, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh said he was seeking more information, while RSN Rayer (DAP-Seri Delima) said: "Let the police investigate; we hope they will carry out a proper and thorough investigation.”

Wong Hon Wai (DAP-Air Itam) said the aide is not involved in his constituency, adding, "I only learnt about the case today".

Yeoh Soon Hin (DAP-Paya Terubong) said he has no idea about the alleged incident, adding: "Let the police investigate everything.”
