Police arrested 41 people, including women and teenagers, who staged an anti-Internal Security Act (ISA) demonstration outside the Kamunting Detention Centre in Taiping, Perak today.

It is learnt that the group who are currently being held at the Taiping district police headquarters, would be produced in the district's magistrates court tomorrow.

However, it could not be ascertained whether they would be remanded for further investigation or charged.

A source said this evening that some 200 people have gathered outside the Taiping district police headquarters where those detained today are being held and some 40 riot police have been stationed to keep watch on the crowd.

During the break-up of the demonstration, some 200 Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel were deployed and the crowd ordered to disperse. When they refused, a police water cannon truck was used after which the 41 demonstrators were detained.

'Innocent Malaysians'

Earlier today, some 1,500 people journeyed to the centre in a convoy dubbed ' Konvoy Perdana ' in hundreds of cars from Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Penang and Kedah.

The 2pm anti-ISA demonstration was organised to mark the 100th day since the arrest of five Keadilan leaders and a reformasi activist who are currently being detained at the camp.

The six were detained under the ISA in early April for allegedly planning to overthrow the government through militant means.

Meanwhile, human rights group Suaram strongly protested the 'high-handed actions' of the police and demanded the immediate release of all those detained.

"It is shameful that a peaceful gathering carried out in solidarity with those detained was met with brute force and arrests of innocent Malaysians," it said in a press statement.

Among those arrested was Aliza Jaffar, wife of ISA detainee and Keadilan youth leader Saari Sungib who is being detained at the Kamunting camp.
