The fight to win Malay votes in the 14th general election (GE14) is only between Umno and PAS, said PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad.

Should it come to choosing between the two parties, Malay voters will pick PAS, which has a "cleaner" track record than Umno, he was quoted saying in Malay daily Sinar Harian.

"The people are aware of Umno's problem-riddled administration. In fact, the records of leaders like Anwar Ibrahim and Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who lead the Pakatan Harapan coalition is also bad.

"On the contrary, PAS' leadership has thus far been clean. No leader from the party has been convicted of bribery, misappropriation or abuse of power, including in Kelantan (which the party leads)," he was quoted telling reporters after a Hari Raya do in Bagan Serai, Perak, on Sunday.

Idris opined that the new leadership line-up announced by Harapan was incapable of posing a threat to PAS or Umno as none of the parties in the opposition coalition had an influence on Malay voters.

As for DAP, he said the party was capable of becoming the "kingmaker" in the coming polls, as it does not need the support of other parties to keep its seats in non-Malay areas.

"This is because the majority of Chinese voters do not need an organisation; they are easily swayed by sentiments, perceptions and emotions played up by DAP.

"This scenario will only 'victimise' the Malay voters and I'm confident GE14 will only be about PAS and Umno," he said.

Idris also dismissed as baseless, allegations that PAS was now "friends" with BN.
