The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (Miti) is one of the earliest ministries to respond to the government’s call to hire persons with disabilities to serve in the public sector.

In a statement today, it said the ministry thus far had achieved the highest percentage to reach its one percent target (of hiring persons with disabilities) set by the government.

“To date, Miti has five officers (0.7 per cent) who are persons with disabilities, the highest number of any ministry to reach one per cent target set by the government,” said its secretary-general J Jayasiri in the statement.

He said this at the opening of Miti’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme held at the Setapak Blindness Special Education Secondary School, an annual tradition by the Miti with the participation of some 40 of its personnel as well as 60 students and teachers from the school.

The selection of the school for the ministry’s CSR programme was in line with the ministry’s people-centric theme, based on a recommendation from its minister Mustapa Mohamed, he said.

Miti would also donate a braille machine in the near future for the use of the school’s students, he added.
