Bersatu's Youth wing has extended its thanks to its counterpart in Umno for joining its effort to resolve the issue of students being blacklisted for not servicing their student loans, despite still studying.

This comes after Umno Youth leader Fathul Bari Mat Jahaya thanked the National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) for heeding their concerns and proposals on the matter.

"We don't mind if they want to take credit, as long as the issue is settled," Bersatu Youth education and student bureau chief Abdul Hannan Khairy said in a text message to Malaysiakini.

"God willing, I will meet with Fathul in the near future and we can together find a solution to this. We await this solution from PTPTN," Hannan said.

Bersatu Youth at a press conference earlier this month raised concerns of degree and post-graduate students who have been barred from travelling outside the country because they did not service the loans they took for their studies at diploma or first-degree level.

Bersatu Youth said this was unfair because the students have yet to join the workforce and had immediately furthered their studies at degree or post-graduate level.

Hannan said Bersatu Youth had never politicised the issue and believes all should work together to resolve it.

"It is well understood that Bersatu Youth does not have direct access to PTPTN and is only seen as the opposition and pushed here and there, to the extent that this issue cannot be resolved," he said.

Bersatu Youth chief Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman earlier said he had approached PTPTN to understand the issue and only took the matter to the media after no solution was put forward.
