Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the people must play their part, including maintaining high discipline, to improve the quality of their life.

He said no government could do everything on its own without the people's contribution to complement its efforts.

"Keeping the cleanliness in our neighbourhood, not jumping the queue at a traffic junction, not to over-eating and exercise regularly may be petty but, these are among the things that the ordinary people can do to complement the efforts by the government," he said in his speech at the Asia Human Resources Development (HRD) Awards 2017 Gala Dinner in Putrajaya tonight.

He said the government had built new houses, opened up new townships with better amenities and necessities and it was not stopping there.

He said the government was building more schools with more conducive environment so that the future generations of the country could enjoy an education that was on par with developing nations.

Zahid said more new hospitals with the best equipment available and new police stations were also being built.

"We are committed to ensuring this country is safe. Interpol's standard ratio for the number of police to population is 1:250 and we are working to achieve that," he said.

During the event, Zahid also presented the Asia HRD Awards, in recognising high achievers and extraordinary contributors who supported human excellence and recognised the value it created.

He said celebrating excellence was about recognising high achievers and role models which are living examples of extraordinary contributions.

Citing several names such as Malaysian sprinter Khairul Hafiz Jantan and shuttler Lee Chong Wei as examples, he said they had inspired many others to keep striving for the best.

"Role models are living examples of extraordinary contributions. It is for this very reason, I think honouring those who show the world the path of excellence is such an important event," Zahid added.
