Jeanne Abdullah, the wife of former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, has challenged every lawmaker to plant a tree in Parliament so it will turn into a popular tourism site.

Jean who is the chairperson of Landscape Malaysia envisages such an effort would create a Parliament in the forest ambiance in 20 years.

She urged the MPs to lead by example in their effort to make the country green again.

"We all know that there will be a Taman Tugu (nearby), so I challenge Parliament to get every member of parliament to plant one tree," she said.

"And, you can beat Taman Tugu Park because you started first," she said at a tree planting event at Parliament today.

The RM650 million Taman Tugu project, which consists of the Taman Tugu Park, four connectors in the surrounding areas to improve accessibility, a learning and innovation centre (Khazanah ILMU) and a national public trust, will be completed in 2020.

"I can imagine this place will be a Parliament in the forest in 10 to 20 years time and I think it will be so beautiful and it can become a popular site for tourists," said Jeanne.
