PKR is merely following in the footsteps of its de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim by holding negotiations with PAS said Wanita PKR chief Zuraida Kamaruddin.

"One-on-one seat negotiations have been the formula prescribed by Anwar for the opposition bloc during previous elections and it has proven to be effective.

"Since PKR has continued engagements with PAS even after PAS ceased to be a coalition partner, avoiding three-cornered fights is still possible; maybe not all, but at least enough to topple BN and take over Putrajaya," Zuraida said in a statement today.

Her remarks as rifts deepen within the party, with deputy president Azmin Ali adamant on continuing talks with PAS.

Selayang MP William Leong, who is opposed to the PAS talks, has quit the party's political bureau, while parliamentary whip Johari Abdul has said that there should be a deadline on the matter.

But PAS does not seem too interested, and its Selangor commissioner Sallehen Mukhyi said the party wants Azmin's Gombak seat back.

Zuraida, however, dismissed Sallehen's remarks as just rhetoric.

"I wouldn't take all these too seriously. Towards the elections, everybody wants to make 'superhero statements'.

"But we have to be practical," told Malaysiakini.

The Ampang MP said it was in Pakatan Harapan's best interest to get PAS on its side, even if it did not join the coalition or agree to its policies.

"As of immediately, the whole nature of the seat negotiation is about numbers and winning the next general election," she said.

She said PAS grassroots were still opposition supporters, and coming up with a practical solution to the split among them was the best strategy to topple BN.

"All we need to do now is to act on it and put it in motion.

"And most importantly, PKR must have a strong grasp of the situation on the ground by strengthening the election machinery and be prepared to take the bull by its horns," she said.
