The following are the comments from some of the winning and losing candidates in today's MCA party polls.

Chua Jui Meng (former vice-president, failed challenger for president):

"Life will carry on. We have to respect the decision by the central delegates. I accept the result and I thank my fellow delegates.

"All the delegates should work with the new leadership. I will see whether I will quit politics. And it is a long way to think about whether to contest in the next party elections."

Dr Ting Chew Peh (former secretary-general, defeated challenger for deputy presidency):

"As a challenger and with the votes that I have garnered, I should be fairly satisfied. I will still remain in the party.

"There is no reason for me to quit politics. I have the support of party members. I am still a party member and a division chairperson.

"I don't want to explain why I have lost. Perhaps the delegates think that the other candidates are more capable than me."

Chan Tse Yuen (former Youth vice-chief, lost battle for deputy presidency):

"I accept the decision by the central delegates and I congratulate Chan Kong Choy (for his victory). I am not sad but surprised by the result.

"When I campaigned, the response from the grassroots was overwhelming. So I am surprised by the votes I secured.

"I think I lost because I was sandwiched in between two big forces. I will continue to write newspaper columns and books.

"Twelve years ago, I lost in another contest but I stayed on in the party. I don't see any reason for not staying with the party now."

Dr Fong Chan Oon (incumbent, victorious candidate for vice-presidency):

"I am humbled by the support of the central delegates. I will work even harder for the party and community.

"I think I secured the highest votes because I have been emphasising my experience and expertise in economic which will enable the party to face the economic challenges under the 9th Malaysia Plan."

Ong Tee Keat (former Youth chief, winning candidate for vice-presidency):

"I must say I have been keeping my fingers crossed and it (the victory) came as a pleasant surprise for me.

"It is not difficult for me to adapt myself to the parent body (of MCA) as I was elected as a central committee member from 1990 to 1999. I know all the mechanisms and administration of the parent body.

Donald Lim Siang Chai (Selangor deputy chairperson, victorious candidate for vice-presidency)

"I feel very happy. We will ensure that we work closely with the new party leadership in the coming three years."
