DAP's Sungkai assemblyperson A Sivanesan has retracted his alleged defamatory statement against Parti Sosialis Malaysia's (PSM) Sungai Siput MP D Jeyakumar.

This was following an intervention by Perak DAP adviser Ngeh Koo Ham who arranged a meeting between the duo.

"Ngeh arranged a meeting where Sivanesan agreed to record a consent judgment that he withdraws his contention that my assets declaration was incomplete as it did not include the assets gifted by his father and that he regrets having made the statement," said Jeyakumar in a statement today.

Jeyakumar said the consent judgment was recorded at the Sessions Court on Aug 7, and the sealed copy was extracted last week.

Jeyakumar had on July 5 filed a defamation suit against Sivanesan for insinuating that he had hidden his assets and was dishonest in his asset declaration after the DAP representative refused to retract his statement.

Sivanesan's allegation was published in Tamil Malar, a Tamil daily, on May 21.

When filing the suit, Jeyakumar said he had sought several top DAP leaders to intervene in the matter but to no avail.

However, Jeyakumar said Ngeh finally intervened before the case came up for hearing.

"The PSM appreciates the role played by Ngeh in settling this issue," he said.
