Pakatan Harapan should seek clarification from PKR on jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's position to continue seat negotiations with PAS, said PKR MP William Leong.

This will put a stop to the ongoing dispute caused by Anwar's letter, which contradicted Harapan's decision to stop negotiation with PAS, he said.

"The decisions (by Harapan and Anwar) appear to be conflicted. I think the Pakatan Harapan presidential council would want to obtain clarification from PKR as to the party's position on the matter," said Leong, who is also a member of the PKR supreme council.

Harapan's decision, he said, should by right supercede the decision of one party (Anwar), but discussions are still necessary because Harapan operates on the principle of obtaining consensus.

Leong advised his party to listen to the voices of grassroots members and the public, whom he thought would want negotiations with PAS to cease, based on a poll conducted by the media.

"PKR leadership must sense the feeling on the ground. Better to know it today than be disappointed on polling day.

"When the people are disappointed, they will either vote against (Harapan) or they won't want to come out to cast their votes," he said, adding that messages from the public have been sent to party leadership. 

On Aug 23, Leong quit the PKR political bureau in protest over the party's continued talks with PAS.

When asked if Anwar was under pressure or being misled in penning the letter, Leong said the PKR leader is his own man.

"Anwar wants to show that all avenues (have been) explored to get PAS into Harapan. He was looking at the bigger picture. 

"PAS said 'no' in a very insulting manner. So, although Anwar, the president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and deputy president Azmin Ali were humble, they (took) these insults for the good of the people.

"But I reminded them that PAS does not look at this as a sign of humility, but a sign of weakness. So when they 'slap' and we continue to keep quiet, they think they are very strong. 

"(Those at the) grassroots are upset, how can our leaders and our party be treated like that?" he asked.

Leong also insisted that he has not changed his mind over his decision not to contest in the coming election.
