An aide to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's wife Rosmah Mansor has taken Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to task over the floods in the state.

Rizal Mansor accused DAP and Pakatan Harapan of making a “janji haprak” (useless promise).

“Before winning (the election), the voters were promised the moon and the stars. But after winning, he (Lim) blames the flood on too much rainfall instead,” he said in a statement.

Rizal said Lim had promised to resolve the flood woes within his first term of governing Penang.

“DAP has still failed to resolve the matter despite being in power for two terms.

“Is this the government that can govern Malaysia in the future? Is this the government that we can hope would be better than BN?

“Is this the government that can handle the matters of a country better when it fails to even handle a small state in a proper manner?” he asked, before saying that the answers to these questions were crystal clear.

In the statement, Rizal also attached a Malaysiakini report from 2013 where Lim promised to resolve the flood woes in Pahang in just one term if the opposition wins the state as well as federal power in the elections.

Last week, MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong used the same news report to take a swipe at Lim over the flood situation in Penang.

Apart from Penang, the BN-governed state of Kedah has also been inundated with floods.

The Penang government attributed the floods to the rainfall, which was recorded as the highest in history at 270mm. This was part of the inter-monsoon phenomenon.

State flood mitigation exco Chow Kon Yeow said state Drainage and Irrigation Department rainfall stations recorded high rainfall in just four hours – 198mm at the Sungai Pinang station (northeast district) and 175mm at the Teluk Bahang Dam station (southwest district).

Lim said the state’s highest rainfall reading of 270mm was recorded at the Air Itam station.
