The Penang state government has announced a one-off payment of RM400 per family or building owner, following floods which inundated the state on Sept 15.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said each family or building owner can only get one payment.

"It must be stressed that this payment is not a precedent but one-off, following the heavy rains due to Typhoon Doksuri, where the rainfall recorded in one day was equal to that of one month," Lim said in a statement today.

He said forms to apply for the aid will be issued on Monday Sept 25, and must be returned within one month in order to receive the one-off payment.

He said the payments will be handled by elected representatives, the Penang City Council (MBPP), the Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP), and village councils.

On Friday, some 100 areas in five Penang districts were inundated by floods after a downpour which lasted more than five hours.

Sea tide was up to 2.1m, while landslides were also reported.

Lim said many victims experienced damage to their buildings or vehicles as a result of the floods.
