Tahfiz student who jumped from third floor recovering well

A student of Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah school who was badly injured after jumping from the third floor to escape the tragic fire at the school last Thursday, is recovering well.

Sharifuddin Musa, 45, said his 11-year-old son Mohd Shahir was still in the intensive care unit of the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

He said his son sustained 20 percent burns on his back, as well as a broken rib and hip bone, and still required respiratory support.

“He (Mohd Shahir) is recovering well and maybe the doctor will take him off the ventilator later today.

“As of now, everything is fine. He is conscious and has given a positive response to the doctor by moving his hand or nodding his head,” he told Bernama.

Sharifuddin said the third of four siblings had always been happy to study at the tahfiz school and was able to memorise Surah Yasin in just three months.

“He used to be a shy person, but after entering the tahfiz school, he told us he had many friends,” he said.

Three surviving victims, including Mohd Shahir, were receiving treatment at the hospital.

The tragic fire at the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah school early Thursday morning last week resulted in the death of 21 students and two teachers.

Six other students and a civilian were injured.

Seven youths aged between 11 and 18 were arrested for allegedly setting the premises on fire.
